A marriage system in old China where young girls before adulthood were bought and raised to become wives for future male children. Also called "Yangbao", "Yangbaofu" and "Miaobao". "Bao" and "Baofu" mean bride. In some cases, they were bought in anticipation of the birth of a male child. In addition to caring for the parents and children, they were used for odd jobs and were considered a kind of domestic slave. It can be seen in records from as early as the Song and Yuan dynasties, and was practiced nationwide until the founding of the People's Republic of China, with the aim of reducing the number of mouths to feed poor families and securing a labor force against the backdrop of potential marriage difficulties in the old society.
