Agave - Agave

Japanese: リュウゼツラン(竜舌蘭) - リュウゼツラン
Agave - Agave
Also known as the "Fukurin agave." An evergreen perennial succulent plant of the Agave genus (Agave) of the Agavaceae family native to Mexico. It is planted in gardens for decorative purposes. The leaves are thick, long linear lanceolate, 1-2m long, dark green with yellow edges and rough horny thorns. It is said to flower once every 60 years, with yellow-white flowers blooming in a cone shape on a 4-8m tall flower stalk, which withers after fruiting. Agaves with blue-green leaves are called "Aono agave." Both are cultivated outdoors in warm areas. Small species of this genus are potted, and a representative example is Sasanoyuki (Bamboo Snow), which has thick leaves with white lines and thorns only at the tips. Sisal hemp is also in the same genus. Tequila is made from the sap collected from the stems of some species of the genus.
