The Maiden of Wushan

Japanese: 巫山の神女 - ふざんのしんじょ

A goddess who appears in the Fu to Gaotang and Fu to the Goddess by Song Yu, a Chinese writer of the Warring States period. She was originally the daughter of the Heavenly Emperor, but died unmarried and was buried south of Wushan, where she became the goddess of Wushan. King Huai of Chu communicated with the goddess in a dream, and King Xiang also met her in a dream. The goddess explained that she would become morning clouds in the morning and rain in the evening, and so their union came to be called cloud and rain in later generations. 中国，戦国期の文人であった宋玉の〈高唐の賦（ふ）〉〈神女の賦〉に登場する神女。もともと天帝の女であったが，未婚のまま死んで巫山の南に葬られ，巫山の神となった。楚の懐王が夢にこの神女と通じ，襄王も彼女と夢の中で会った。神女が，自分は旦（あした）に朝雲となり暮（ゆうべ）に行雨となると説明したことから，男女の交りを後世，雲雨という。この神女伝説の基盤に古い神話伝承があったことについては，聞一多〈高唐神女伝説之分析〉(《神話与詩》)に詳しい。
