Willow on the shore - Kishinoyanagi

Japanese:
Willow on the shore - Kishinoyanagi

The title of a Nagauta song. It was first performed in June 1873 (Meiji 6). The lyrics were by Kineya Umehiko, and the music was by Kineya Shojiro III. It is a song about the scenery of the Okawa riverbank (Sumida riverbank) in summer, and is said to have been composed to commemorate the happy union of a daughter of a boathouse in Yanagibashi and the son of a nearby second-hand clothing store, who was rescued from a double suicide. It is a short piece, but the title is well known. There is nothing particularly unique about the music, and the melody imitating "Tsukuda no Aikata" is used in the introduction and conclusion, creating a simple overall piece. The shamisen is tuned in honcho → san-gadari → honcho.
