Three brothers, Pol de Limbourg, Herman de L. and Jean de L., were Franco-Flemish painters in the Netherlands. All were from Gelderland, and their birth years are unknown, but they died around 1416. Their father, Arnold, was a sculptor. He was the nephew of Jean Malouel, a painter who served the Duke of Burgundy. Around 1399, Herman and Jean trained in a metalsmith's workshop in Paris, and there is a record that Pol de Limbourg and Jean worked on the illumination of a Bible manuscript for the Duke of Burgundy in 1402.
