…But his dream of becoming a poet and novelist gradually gave way to his awareness as a critic. From around 1830, in addition to his current affairs, he began to write biographical essays on writers (such as “Portraits of Literature” and “Portraits of Women”), and in his large-scale work “Port-Royal” (1840-59), based on a public lecture he gave in Switzerland in 1837-38, he portrayed the entire Port-Royal monastery as if it were a portrait of a single person, focusing on the secret religious life of the hermits who gathered at the monastery in the 17th century. His criticism, which he continued to publish every Monday from 1849 until the year of his death (Causeries du Lundi, vol. 15, 1851-62; “New Mondays, vol. 13, 1863-70), is a monumental work that established “modern criticism” that shifted its focus from judgment to understanding and explanation. …
