Takashi Koyasu

A newspaper manager and businessman in the Meiji period. His childhood name was Tetsugoro. He was the eldest son of Koyasu Muneshige and Maki, samurai of the Ogaki domain (Gifu prefecture). He studied English and Dutch studies under Sakuma Shozan and Omura Masujiro. He worked as an interpreter for the shogunate and the Meiji government, and in 1870 (Meiji 3), he founded the letterpress printing company Nisshusha in Bentencho, Yokohama with Motono Moriyuki and Shibata Shokichi. In 1873, he co-authored "Fukuyin and Izu Eiwa Jibo" (English-Japanese Dictionary with Sounds and Illustrations). In November 1874, Nisshusha launched the "Yomiuri Shimbun." He was also active in the business world, founding the trading company Fuso Shokai in 1880. 明治時代の新聞経営者,実業家。幼名は鉄五郎。大垣藩(岐阜県)藩士子安宗茂,まきの長男。佐久間象山,大村益次郎らに英語,蘭学を学ぶ。幕府や明治政府で通訳などを勤め,明治3(1870)年,本野盛亨,柴田昌吉らと横浜弁天町に活版印刷所・日就社を設立。6年柴田と共著の『附音・挿図 英和字彙』を発行。7年11月日就社より『読売新聞』を創刊。また13年に貿易会社扶桑商会を設立するなど実業界でも活躍。22年『読売新聞』から離れ,26年に『いさみ新聞』を創刊した。<参考文献>『読売新聞百年史』,西田長寿『日本ジャーナリズム史研究』,竹内繁『読売新聞の創始者子安峻』
