Its abbreviation is Car. This constellation was created by French astronomer N.L. Lacaille by dividing the huge Greek constellation Argo into four parts (the other three are called "Lashinban", "Ho" and "Tomo"). It is a large constellation along the Milky Way, occupying the southernmost part of the original Argo. In Japan, only the northern half is visible, and the whole picture cannot be seen. Canopus, the alpha star, is a supergiant star of type F0 with a luminosity of -0.72, and is the second brightest star in the entire sky after Sirius. In China, it is called the "Star of the Elderly" and is depicted as a red-faced man named Jurojin who loves alcohol.

略号はCar。ギリシア時代の巨大な星座アルゴ座をフランスの天文学者N.L.ラカイユが4分割(他の三つは〈らしんばん〉〈ほ〉〈とも〉)して作った星座。もとのアルゴ座のもっとも南部を占める天の川沿いの大星座である。日本ではその北半部が見えるだけで全貌は見えない。α星カノープスは光度－0.72等，F0型の超巨星で，シリウスにつぎ全天第2の輝星である。中国では〈南極老人星〉と呼ばれ，酒好きの赤ら顔の寿老人の姿に描かれる。
