Born: 1623/1630. Reims Died December 9, 1678. Paris. French printmaker. After studying printmaking under N. Renisson, he went to Paris and learned portrait painting from P. Champagne and printmaking techniques from A. Bosch. He started out as a portrait painter using pastel, but around 1648 he produced his first prints using J. Morin's techniques. He then absorbed C. Mellan's techniques, and in 1655 established his own engraving technique. In 1660 he was elevated to the nobility and given a pension by Louis XIV. He produced about 300 prints, of which 200 were portraits. Of these, 11 are portraits of Louis XIV, and there are also portraits of J. Colbert and J. Mazarin, and about 30 are life-size portraits.
