Shinpukuji Temple Ruins

Shinpukuji Temple Ruins
This site is located in Shinpukuji, Iwatsuki City, Saitama Prefecture, and dates from the end of the late to early final Jomon period. It is located on the left bank of the Ayase River valley, facing west at the back of a small tributary of the Iwatsuki Hills, and consists of a late shell mound on the plateau and a late peat layer in the alluvial plain at the western foot of the hill. The name Angyo-style pottery from this period comes from the Sarugai shell mound in Kawaguchi City (formerly Angyo Village), but the actual pottery type is based on the excavated materials from this shell mound, which was excavated by the Oyama Institute of Prehistory in 1926 and reported by Kono Isamu. Later, Yamauchi Kiyoo distinguished between the Angyo-2 type excavated from the shell mound and the Angyo-3 type excavated from the peat layer as late and late, and built the basis for the chronology from Angyo-1 to Angyo-3C types.
