Northern Shikoku

Japanese: 北四国 - きたしこく
Northern Shikoku

...The total area is 18,800 km2, which is 5% of the nation, and the population is 4.18 million (1995), which is 3.3% of the nation, both of which are the smallest of the eight regions of Japan. Until the early modern period, Shikoku was divided into four provinces: Sanuki, Iyo, Awa, and Tosa, but now it is divided into four prefectures: Kagawa, Ehime, Tokushima, and Kochi. Generally, Kagawa and Ehime are called Northern Shikoku, and Tokushima and Kochi are called Southern Shikoku, but depending on the distance from Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe, Kagawa and Tokushima are also called Eastern Shikoku, and Ehime and Kochi are also called Western Shikoku. In terms of area, Northern Shikoku accounts for 40% of the entire Shikoku, and Southern Shikoku for 60%, while in terms of population, Northern Shikoku accounts for 60% and Southern Shikoku for 40%.
