A commercial and industrial city in southwest Virginia, United States. Population 94,911 (2000). Located between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Plateau, it is the southern gateway to the Shenandoah Valley. It is the commercial, industrial and transportation center of the southern Shenandoah Valley, with industries such as furniture, textiles, clothing, electrical appliances and metals developing. Settlement began around 1740, and it grew rapidly with the opening of the railroad in 1882, and was incorporated as a city in 1884.
