...Because he was ambitious and had a strong sense of pride, he often fought with other members of his school. In order to vent his anger at the criticism he received for his self-annotated 100-verse poem, Haikai no Chu (1632), in memory of his deceased mother, he published Himuromori (1646) in which he criticized Shigeyori's Kefukigusa (1645). He also anonymously published Gojo Hyakuku (1663), in which he harshly criticized his fellow students while praising himself. In a New Year's poem written the year after Teitoku's death in 1654 (Shoo 3), he pretended to be a direct successor to Teitoku, incurring public ire. However, Teitoku recognized his talent, and gave him an exceptional critique for his work Seisho Senku (A Thousand Verses) published in 1648 (Keian 1), and three years later he was allowed to be a critic. In 1656 (Meireki 2), he edited and published Gyokukaishu, a representative anthology of the Teimon school, as per his will, and dedicated it to his spirit. His style was orthodox yet rich in haiku, and in later years Basho and other Shofu poets revered him as the father of the true style of haiku. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Gyoku Haishu" are listed below.
