Hans Kudlich
1823‐1917
A revolutionary from Silesia (now Silesia, Poland), he made a historic contribution to the emancipation of the Austrian peasants. After studying philosophy and law at the University of Vienna, he participated in the Vienna Revolution of 1848. He was injured during the March Revolution, and was elected to the Constituent Assembly on his return home, where he won the abolition of feudal servitude for the peasants in the September assembly of the same year. After the defeat of the revolution, he fled via Germany and Switzerland to America, where he gained renown as a doctor. In America, he opposed slavery. [Conscience, Power]
