Max Linder

1883‐1925
A French comic actor from the silent film era. In Japan, he is known as Max Landé. After graduating from drama school, he performed on the stage in Paris, but in 1905 he entered the film industry. In 1910, he created the main character "Max." Until then, comedic protagonists were exaggerated and obviously comical, like circus clowns, whose costumes alone drew laughs. However, Landé's unique style of playing the "clown" was that he dressed like a completely ordinary man, wearing a black formal suit, a top hat, patent leather shoes, white gloves, and carrying a cane, in the style of a perfect gentleman.

サイレント時代のフランスの喜劇俳優。日本ではマックス･ランデの表記で知られてきた。演劇学校を卒業し，パリで舞台に立っていたが，1905年映画界入り。10年に〈マックス〉という主人公をつくり出した。それまでの喜劇の主人公は，サーカスの道化役のように，誇張され，扮装だけで笑いをさそう，みるからに滑稽なものであったが，ランデルはまったくふつうの人間の扮装，すなわち黒の礼服，シルクハット，エナメルの靴に白い手袋をはめ，ステッキを持った，一分のすきもない紳士のスタイルで〈道化〉を演じたところにそのユニークさがあった。
