From Moscow, Russia

The Tsar's sovereignty was recognized by the Ukrainian Cossacks of Khmelnytsky, who had rebelled against Poland, and the subsequent war with Poland (1654-67), in which Russia quickly regained control of the Smolensk region, and in the Truce of Andrussovo (1667) Russia gained control of Ukraine on the east bank of the Dnieper River and Kiev on the west bank, and secured these territories with the "Perpetual Peace" of 1686.
[Intake of Western culture]
By advancing into Ukraine, Russia entered into a fateful confrontation with Turkey, the suzerain of the Crime Khanate and which itself had territory on the northern shore of the Black Sea; on the other hand, Ukraine was an important passageway for Moscow through which Western culture could enter.
