Food allowances provided to members of the imperial family and government officials under the ancient Japanese Ritsuryo system. Also called monthly salaries, staple foods, side dishes, and seasonings were requested by various offices each month according to the rank and number of officials, and were provided by government offices under the Imperial Household Ministry. Rice was provided by the Oiryo, while salt, sauce, fish, and vegetables were provided by the Daizenshiki. The amount provided varied depending on the rank and status of the official, but the general amount for rice was 1 to 2 sho per day. In the 8th century, a light tax was levied in addition to general taxes to cover monthly salaries, but later, instead of a special tax, the annual amount of rice stored in the Kyoto storehouse was used.
