A Native American tribe living on the southeastern coast of Alaska. Their language belongs to the Na-Dene language family. They hunt seals, dolphins, and otters, and collect shellfish and roots. They excel at making canoes, carving, stone tools, copper tools, blankets, baskets, and other crafts, and their elaborate totem poles are a symbol of their craftsmanship. Their society is divided into four clans and 14 territorial groups, and the basic unit is a politically independent matrilineage, each with its own chief. Since the mid-19th century, the commercial development of Alaska has led to a marked stratification and disparity between the rich and the poor. The population has been in steady decline, but this trend has now been halted. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
