A deep blue iron phosphate mineral. Its chemical composition is Fe 2+ 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ・8H 2 O. Some of the Fe may be replaced by Mn 2+ , Mg, Ca, etc. In fresh, unoxidized specimens, the iron is a divalent atom and its color is colorless to white or yellowish, but as Fe 2+ oxidizes to Fe 3+ , it gradually changes color from light blue to dark green to deep blue. Minerals that show such a color change are rare, but this is a particularly striking example. In most cases, it is in an oxidized state and is colored blue, hence the name.
