A plucked stringed instrument of the lute family (illustration) used by the Tibetan people in Tibet and neighboring areas such as Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, and China. It is correctly called sgra snyan, and dram snyan is an inaccurate phonetic spelling. In China it is called chamu nie or six-stringed qin. It has three courses of double strings (six strings), and the underside of the sounding body is covered with animal leather (sheepskin or snakeskin). The top of the long, slender neck is usually carved with a horse's head or dragon's head. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
