The second king of the 26th (Sait) Dynasty of ancient Egypt. Reigned 609-594 BC. He began his reign during the decline of the Assyrian Empire, defeating King Josiah of Judah at the Battle of Megiddo and advancing his army to the Euphrates River, briefly restoring the former Egyptian Empire. However, he was completely defeated by the newly emerging Neo-Babylonian prince Nebuchadnezzar and Carchemish, and lost his Asian territories. He was able to keep the Egyptian mainland because the prince returned to his homeland after the death of his father, but after this he gave up territorial ambitions in Asia and devoted himself to trade.
