Petrópolis (English spelling)
A city in the central part of Rio de Janeiro State, southeast of Brazil. It is located about 40km north of the state capital Rio de Janeiro, in a valley in the eastern part of the Sierra de Mar mountain range, at an altitude of about 810m. It was founded in 1845 by German immigrants with the support of the Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II, and developed as a summer resort for the emperor. The city was named after the emperor. It was the capital of the state from 1894 to 1903. It is still known as a summer resort, and there are many villas for cariocas (citizens of Rio) in the city. Luxurious mansions and cathedrals from the imperial era remain, and the old royal palace has been turned into a museum. It is connected by rail and road from Rio. It has a variety of industries and is home to the Petrópolis Catholic University (1961). Population: 255,211 (estimated 1991).
