A Turkish mystical sect founded by Rumi (1207-1273). It developed into a powerful sect within the Ottoman Empire from the first half of the 15th century onwards. It is characterised by doctrines linked to Christianity and Neoplatonism, and is well known for its jigul ritual, in which a group of people spin around in time with music. In 1925, the monastery was closed along with other mystical sects, but it still has a strong following. → Related Articles Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
