Rabanus Maurus

German Benedictine monk and Archbishop of Mainz. Also known as Hrabanus Maurus, he is known as the "Teacher of Germania." He entered the Fulda monastery at a young age, studied under Alcuin at Tours, and became head of the Fulda monastery school in 804 and served as abbot from 822 to 842. In 847, he was appointed Archbishop of Mainz by King Louis of Germany. Although he was not an original scholar, his most important achievements were his dedication to the training of the clergy and his inheritance and development of the academic and educational policies of Charlemagne.

ドイツのベネディクト会修道士，マインツ大司教。フラバヌス･マウルスHrabanus Maurusともいう。〈ゲルマニアの教師〉と称される。若くしてフルダ修道院に入り，トゥールにおいてアルクインの下で学び，804年フルダ修道院学校長になり，822‐842年修道院長の職を果たした。847年ドイツ王ルートウィヒの任命によってマインツ大司教になった。独創的な学者ではなかったが，重要な功績は聖職者養成に献身し，カール大帝時代の学問･教育政策を継承し発展させたことにある。
