...The story is about a poor peasant girl who is raped by her landlord and flees into the mountains, where her hair turns gray from the hardships she endures, only to be rescued by the Eighth Route Army and liberated as a human being. This story was widely told in the rural areas of northern China during the Anti-Japanese War, and was created as an opera in 1945 by He Jingzhi, Ma Ke, and others from the Lu Xun Academy of Art. It was met with an explosive reception from the people, and the theme song, "The North Wind Blows," sung to the melody of a northern Chinese folk song, spread throughout China. ...
