Shima [Hot Springs] - Shima

Japanese: 四万[温泉] - しま

A national health resort hot spring located in Nakanojo-cho, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture, along the Shima River, a tributary of the Agatsuma River. The springs contain gypsum and have a bitter taste, and are slightly saline. 43-82°C. There are four baths: Onsenguchi, Yamaguchi, Arayu, and Hinatami. They have long been known as one of the three great hot springs in Jomo, along with Kusatsu and Ikaho. It is said that the Uesugi clan bathed in the hot springs in the Middle Ages, and in the Edo Period, Yamaguchi had two baths and ten hot spring inns, and was said to be effective against headaches and beriberi. There is the Hinatami Yakushido temple and the Akazawa forest road, which is beautiful with its autumn leaves. There is a bus that runs from Nakanojo Station on the Agatsuma Line.

群馬県吾妻(あがつま)郡中之条町，吾妻川の支流四万川に沿う国民保養温泉。含石膏苦味泉，弱食塩泉など。43〜82℃。温泉口，山口，新湯(あらゆ)，日向見(ひなたみ)の４湯があり，古くから草津，伊香保とともに上毛三名湯といわれる。中世上杉氏が入湯したと伝え，山口は江戸時代には浴湯２ヵ所，湯宿10ヵ所で，頭痛・脚気などに効くとされた。日向見薬師堂，紅葉の美しい赤沢林道がある。吾妻線中之条駅からバスが通じる。
