Yongkang and Yongjia Schools

Representative scholars of this school include Chen Liang of Yongkang County, Wuzhou, Xue Jixuan (1134-73), Chen Fuliang (1137-1203), and Ye Shih (1137-1203) of Yongjia County, Wenzhou. They are also called the Yongkang-Yongjia School after their hometowns, or the Utilitarian School. They argued that righteousness apart from utilitarianism is impossible, whereas the Taoist school of Chengzi and Zhu Xi valued righteousness over profit and the motives of the heart over the results of actions. They proposed concrete plans for military and financial affairs, and conducted classical studies from that perspective.
