Music in Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism, or Lamaism, is based on music for religious ceremonies, and in a broader sense can also include music accompanying various masked dances performed after ceremonies. Ritual music is performed by lamas reciting sutras and hymns in unison with monophonic chanting and instrumental accompaniment. There is no significant difference between the ritual music of the Nyingma sect, founded by Padmasambhava, or the ancient sects such as the Kadam sect, Sakya sect, and Kagyu sect, and the Gelug sect since Tsongkhapa. There are only minor regional changes in Lamaism in the Tibetan Plateau, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, and other areas, but there are some changes in the ritual music in various parts of Ladakh in northern India.
