Rāvaṇa (English spelling)
A demon king of Lanka who appears in the great Indian epic poem Ramayana. He is said to be the leader of the Rakshasas. He is said to have 10 heads, 20 arms, and four legs. To please the god Brahma, he performed ascetic practices for 10,000 years, offering one head every 1,000 years, and when he was about to offer his tenth head, he was granted the god's blessing and was given immortality. His powers grew so much that he even made the gods serve him as slaves, but he was destroyed by Rama, who led an army of monkeys, for stealing Sita, the wife of the hero Rama.
