[Died] May 8, 1967, Southampton. American playwright. Real name Leopold Reizenstein. He studied law but turned to playwriting early on. His debut work, On Trial (1914), drew attention for its application of the flashback technique of film to theatrical performance, and The Adding Machine (23) used the techniques of German Expressionism to satirize humans controlled by machines. After Street Scene (29, Pulitzer Prize), set in an apartment building in a slum in New York, he devoted himself to realism and produced many plays, including Counsellor-at-Law (31), We, the People (33), Judgment Day (34), and Dream Girl (45). His other works include the novels The Show Must Go On (49) and the autobiography Minority Report (63).

Born October 13, 1962 in Starkville, Mississippi. American football player. Real name Jerry Lee Rice. He is considered the best wide receiver in NFL history, with his 190cm tall build and powerful attacks that overwhelmed opponents. While attending Mississippi Valley State University, he set 18 new records in the NCAA Division I AA and was selected as the All-American. In 1985, he joined the San Francisco 49ers. In 1987, despite only playing 12 games due to the strike, he broke the record for the most touchdown receptions in a season and was selected as the NFL's Most Valuable Player. He won the Super Bowl in three seasons, 1988, 1989, and 1994, and became the face of the team along with quarterback Joe Montana. In 1988, he set numerous records, including the most points scored in a season, and was selected as the Most Valuable Player at the 23rd Super Bowl. In 2001, he moved to the Oakland Raiders. In 2004, he moved to the Seattle Seahawks.

Rice, Tim(othy Miles Bindon)

Born November 10, 1944 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. British musical lyricist and scriptwriter. Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) and Evita (1976), which he collaborated with A. Lloyd Webber, were hits. Even after his collaboration with Lloyd Webber ended, he continued to write lyrics and scripts for musicals such as Chess (1984), and also provided lyrics for musicians such as Paul McCartney.

Greek courtesan (hetaira) of the 5th and 4th centuries BCE. Three are mentioned in Athenaeus' Deipnosophistai: one was the lover of the philosopher Aristippus of Cyrene, one was the daughter of a lover of Alcibiades, and one was a child of Alexander the Great. The stories surrounding them are more anecdotal than historical.

Died September 19, 1860, New York. American vaudeville performer. Known as Jim Crow, he was a hit black song and dance act. He was also popular in London, and brought the minstrel show craze to England. Jim Crow later became synonymous with subjugated blacks, and was also the name of the American law that discriminated against blacks.
