Born: September 28, 1892, New York [Died] May 8, 1967, Southampton. American playwright. Real name Leopold Reizenstein. He studied law but turned to playwriting early on. His debut work, On Trial (1914), drew attention for its application of the flashback technique of film to theatrical performance, and The Adding Machine (23) used the techniques of German Expressionism to satirize humans controlled by machines. After Street Scene (29, Pulitzer Prize), set in an apartment building in a slum in New York, he devoted himself to realism and produced many plays, including Counsellor-at-Law (31), We, the People (33), Judgment Day (34), and Dream Girl (45). His other works include the novels The Show Must Go On (49) and the autobiography Minority Report (63). rice |
