Sanageyama

A mountain located in the northern part of Aichi Prefecture, on the border between Seto City and Toyota City. It is 629 meters above sea level. The geology is made up of granite as the parent rock, and is intruded with spherical granite (chrysanthemum stone), a nationally designated natural monument. The natural hemlock forest on the summit is a valuable botanical resource. The weathered soil (saba soil) around the southwest foot of the mountain is high-quality pottery clay, and over 1,000 kiln remains have been discovered at the ancient and medieval Sanageyama kiln sites. The main shrine of Sanage Shrine, one of the three Mikawa shrines, is located at the foot of the mountain, and the branch shrines Higashimiya and Nishimiya are enshrined on the summit, as well as the grave of Ousu no Mikoto. It is said to be the oldest area in the prefecture to be encouraged to develop as a pottery production area. It is included in the Aichi Highlands Quasi-National Park. There are several hiking trails, including a route from Unkoji Temple on the Seto city side and a route from Sanage Shrine on the Toyota city side.

愛知県北部、瀬戸市と豊田市(とよたし)の境にある山。標高629メートル。地質は花崗(かこう)岩を母岩とし、国指定天然記念物の球状花崗岩（菊石）が貫入され、山頂の天然ツガ林は貴重な植物学上の資源。南西麓(ろく)一帯の風化土（サバ土）は良質な陶土で、古代・中世の猿投山古窯址(し)群では1000基を超える窯跡が発見された。三河(みかわ)三社の一つ式内社猿投神社本社は麓(ふもと)に、山頂には分社東宮、西宮を祀(まつ)り、大碓命(おおうすのみこと)の墓所もある。陶器産地として県内では、最古に開発が勧められた地区といわれる。愛知高原国定公園に含まれる。登山道は瀬戸市側は雲興寺からのルート、豊田市側は猿投神社からのルートなどがある。
