...The court style that flowed in from Paris and Burgundy in the west at the same time bore fruit in the elegant forms of Meister Franke and Konrad von Soest (c. 1370-c. 1425), and eventually reached its zenith in the Cologne school of Meister der hl. Veronika (years of birth and death unknown), the painter of St. Veronica, and Lochner (International Gothic style). On the other hand, the faithful observation of nature in the works of Lukas Moser (c. 1390-?) and Hans Multscher (c. 1400-67) of southern Germany suggests the imminent arrival of a new era. However, the major roles in German painting in the second half of the 15th century were played by Hans Pleydenwurf (?-1472), Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519), Schongauer, Holbein the Elder, and Pacher, whose works were directly and indirectly influenced by Netherlandish and northern Italian painting, and who paved the way for the emergence of Dürer.
