Kawabata Doki

Japanese:
Kawabata Doki

A mochi merchant from Kyoto. Nakamura Gorozaemon, the son-in-law of Watanabe Susumu, who lived in Toba, a southern suburb of Kyoto, became a Buddhist monk and took the name Doki. Doki lived in Shinzaike, near the Mikawa River that flows outside the fence of the Imperial Palace, around 1504 (Eisho 1), and took the name Kawabata as his shop name. Later, he opened a mochi shop and joined the mochi troupe, but before long he began wearing brown-dyed plain sliding doors and presenting mochi on inkstone lids to the Imperial Court. The chest from that time is still in the possession of the Kawabata family. In 1577 (Tensho 5), when the Imperial Court repaired the Tsuiji and other structures, Doki contributed to the expenses and other efforts. He was exempted from taxes such as sake tax (probably from brewing or selling sake) by Oda Nobunaga. His grave is at Jofukuji Temple in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City. His descendants, who also bear the name Doki, have taken over the business and live in Kyoto to this day. He is famous for Doki rice dumplings.
