A poetry society. Founded on November 11, 1899, it was dissolved in October 1949. Its official name was Tokyo Shinshi-sha. It was founded by Yosano Tekkan, who split off from Ochiai Naofumi's Asaka-sha with the aim of innovating traditional waka poetry. It launched its journal Myojo in April 1900, and reigned over the poetry world as the mother of romanticism in the mid- to late Meiji period. Its foundation was determined by Yosano Akiko's Midaregami (1901), and it brought together such brilliant poets as Kubota Utsubo, Takamura Kotaro, Soma Gofu, Yoshii Isamu, Ishikawa Takuboku, Kitahara Hakushu, and Kinoshita Mokutaro, but it went into decline with the rise of naturalism, and Myojo ceased publication with its 100th issue in November 1908. However, the lifeblood of Shinshisha survived with Tekkan and Akiko, and was succeeded by such magazines as Subaru (09-13), Tokihagi (09-10), the second edition of Myojo (21-27), Fuyukaku (30-52) published by their disciples after the deaths of Tekkan and Akiko, and the third edition of Myojo (47-49) published by their eldest son Yosano Hikaru. It nurtured such poets as Horiguchi Daigaku, Sato Haruo, Okamoto Kanoko, Hara Asao, and Mizukami Takitarō, and was a major source of modern tanka throughout the Meiji and Taisho periods.
