…The group was founded in 1947 by director and actor Julian Beck and his wife Judith Malina, and was active in New York. Based in a small theater that opened in 1959, they staged plays with shocking themes, such as Jack Gelber's "Connection," which dealt with drug addicts, and Kenneth H. Brown's "The Brigade," which was set in a US Navy brigade, in a style that rejected traditional realism, and had a great influence. In 1963, the theater was closed for unpaid income taxes, and the group moved to Europe, and politically they strengthened their anarchist stance. …
