A form of popular entertainment popular in Britain from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and the venue where it is performed. It originated in the 18th century as songs sung to entertain patrons in pubs, and gradually became more complex. Canterbury Hall, opened in London in 1852 by Charles Norton, was Britain's first purpose-built hall, and had an area with chairs and tables where patrons could eat and drink, as well as a stage. Since then, similar halls have been built all over the country. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
