A collection of German humorous tales. Published in 1598. Author unknown. One of the so-called folk books, it is not a translation but an original German creation. It is a rehash of Das Lalebuch, published the previous year, and is set in Schilda (a fictional town), collecting the folly and farce of the townspeople. The tales include a triangular town hall that was built but forgotten to make windows, a field that was sowed with salt before harvesting it, and a town hall bell that was hidden at the bottom of the sea but never retrieved. From these stories, "The Schildans" later became synonymous with foolish people. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
