A bloc is a set of economic blocs formed by integrating several countries economically, promoting trade within the blocs through preferential tariffs and maintaining discriminatory high tariffs for other countries. World trade fell sharply in the 1930s due to the global depression, and in response, the British Commonwealth formed the Sterling Bloc (Pound Bloc) based on preferential tariffs through the Ottawa Agreement in 1932. This was the beginning of the bloc economy. The aim of this was to close off the domestic market from other countries and ease the domestic depression. Germany responded by forming a bilateral settlement agreement with the countries of Southeast Europe under a similar concept, and promoted the creation of a broader economic region. In addition, currency blocs were formed one after another, such as the gold bloc centered on France, the dollar bloc centered on the United States, and the yen bloc centered on Japan. These exclusive bloc economies destroyed multilateral free trade, intensified political and economic friction between the blocs, and were one of the causes of the Second World War.

いくつかの国を経済的に統合して、域内では特恵関税などにより貿易を盛んにし、域外に対しては差別的な高い関税を維持することなどによって一つの経済圏を形成すること。1930年代の世界的な大不況によって世界貿易は大幅な落ち込みをみせたが、それに対処するため、イギリス連邦が32年オタワ協定によって特恵関税を軸とするスターリング・ブロック（ポンド・ブロック）を形成したのがブロック経済の始まりである。それは、域内市場を外国から遮断して国内の不況を和らげることをねらったものであった。その後、これに対抗してドイツも、同様の構想のもとに東南ヨーロッパ諸国と双務的な清算協定を結んで、広域経済化を進めた。また、フランスを中心とする金ブロック、アメリカを中心とするドル・ブロック、日本を中心とする円ブロックなど、通貨ブロックが次々に形成された。これら排他的なブロック経済は、多角的な自由貿易を破壊するものであり、ブロック相互の間の政治的・経済的な摩擦を強め、第二次世界大戦を引き起こす一つの遠因となった。
