A Flemish painter. After Memling's death in 1494, he inherited the position of official painter of Bruges. He was influenced by van der Weyden and van der Goes. His works are characterized by a strong sense of sculpture and a harmony between idealism and realism, and many of them are enveloped in a serene atmosphere. His representative works include The Judgement of King Cambyses (1498, in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Bruges) and The Baptism of Christ (in the same collection).

フランドルの画家。1494年にメムリンクが亡くなり，ブリュージュの公画家の地位を受け継いだ。ファン・デル・ウェイデン，ファン・デル・フースなどの影響を受けた。強い彫塑的な量感，理想性と写実性との調和などを特色とし，おだやかな雰囲気に包まれた作品が多い。代表作に《カンビュセス王の判決》（1498年，ブルッヘ市立美術館蔵）や《キリストの洗礼》（同館蔵）などがある。
