A city in southeastern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in April 1996 from Yoshikawa Town in Kitakatsushika County. Occupying the alluvial lowlands between the Edogawa and Nakagawa rivers, it has been a producer of early-season rice since the early Edo period, and Yoshikawa, the main settlement on the natural levee of the Furutone River, was a distribution center for rice transported by boat. Since the 1960s, many small factories have moved in, and since the opening of the Musashino Line in 1973 and the construction of public housing complexes, it has become a rapidly residential area. 31.66 km2 . 埼玉県南東部の市。1996年4月北葛飾(きたかつしか)郡吉川町から市制。江戸川と中川の間の沖積低地を占め,江戸時代初期からの早場米産地で,古利根川の自然堤防上にある主集落の吉川は,舟運による米の集散地であった。1960年代以降小規模工場が多く進出し,1973年武蔵野線が開通,公団団地が造成されてから住宅地化が著しい。31.66km2。6万5298人(2010)。
