[Died] March 20, 1995. Born in New Jersey. An American playwright. Known for his realistic portrayals of socially critical themes that idealize democracy. After graduating from Cornell University, he worked as an actor for a time. His debut work, Men in White, performed in 1933, depicts hospital life centering on a young doctor who is torn between his sense of medical mission and the real world, and won the Pulitzer Prize. His other works include Dead End (1935), which depicts boys from the slums; The Patriots (43), which deals with the history of early American democracy; Detective Story (49), a tragedy about a detective who has lost his humanity; and Darkness at Noon (51), a dramatization of A. Koestler's novel.

[died] January 23, 1875. Eversley, Hampshire. British clergyman and novelist. In 1848, together with his friend FD Morris and others, he founded the Christian Socialist movement. He published Yeast (1848), a novel dealing with social and religious issues, and then wrote Alton Locke (50), whose protagonist is a young man who participates in the Chartist movement. He later became more conservative, writing historical novels such as Westward Ho! (55). In 1864, he had a debate with JH Newman, which led to the creation of Newman's Apologia.
