A village in Kami County in the central eastern part of Kochi Prefecture. Population 2,095 (1995). Located on the east bank of the mouth of the Monobe River, which flows south, the Koso River flows down to the east, resulting in marshes and wet rice fields, and frequent flooding. Facing Tosa Bay to the south, the area is lined with sand dunes. The Sumiyoshi Sand Dunes ruins from the late Yayoi period are located here, and pottery has been excavated and shell mounds have also been discovered. The low-lying rural area is home to two rice crops a year, as well as greenhouse gardening. Eggplants, cucumbers, and other crops are produced, and sweet potatoes are cultivated in the sand dune area. Shirasu (whitebait) milt is caught along the coast using boat seine nets, which are then processed into chirimen jako (small dried baby sardines) and shipped, and eel farming is also carried out.
