A town in Isumi County in southern Chiba Prefecture. Most of the land is hilly, with rice fields in the lowlands along the Isumi River. The city center developed as a castle town for the Honda and Matsudaira clans, but fell into decline after the Meiji era when it moved off the main railway line. It is connected to the outer Boso Peninsula by the Isumi Railway, and to the Tokyo Bay coast by the Kominato Railway. Iodine is produced from underground brine produced along with natural gas, which was developed in the early Showa era. Bamboo shoots, shiitake mushrooms, strawberries, and other crops are produced here. Area: 129.87 km2 . Population: 10,671 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
