Lynx spider (English name: Oxyopes sertatus)

Japanese: ササグモ(英語表記)Oxyopes sertatus
Lynx spider (English name: Oxyopes sertatus)
Order Araneae, Family Oxyopidae. Body length about 1cm. Two rows of dark brown and orange-reddish brown markings on a yellow-green background. Long black spines line the walking legs. It wanders among the grass and on the leaves of trees, jumping skillfully to catch insects. It lays eggs on the leaves and then covers them to protect them. There have been attempts to artificially breed them as a natural enemy of the Japanese cedar gall fly, which damages Japanese cedars. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. There are several species of Oxyopidae known from Japan, including O. badius and O. macilentus . There are relatively many species in tropical and subtropical regions. Although they are called Oxyopidae, they do not specifically live on bamboo grass, but are more common in grasslands. (→Spiders)
