Charles - Ray Charles

Japanese: チャールズ - ちゃーるず(英語表記)Ray Charles
Charles - Ray Charles

American singer, pianist, alto saxophonist, and songwriter. His real name was Ray Charles Robinson. He was born in Albany, Georgia, and grew up in Florida. He lost his sight at the age of seven due to an illness, and studied classical piano and clarinet at the state school for blind children from 1937 to 1945. After participating in several bands from 1947, he moved to Seattle in 1948. He formed the McSon Trio, modeled after the Nat King Cole Trio, and attracted attention for his jazz and blues music. He began recording records in 1949. In 1954, he formed his own band. He had a string of hits, starting with "I Got a Woman" (1955) and "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" (1956), and "What'd I Say" (1959) became his first million-seller. He won the Grammy Award for Best Male Single in 1960 for "Georgia on My Mind," and later won 12 Grammy Awards during his lifetime, including "A Song for You" in 1993. In 2005, he won eight Grammy Awards, including Best Album for his posthumous album "Genius Love" and Best Record for his duet with Norah Jones, "Here We Go Again." He was greatly recognized as a "genius" and revered for his contribution to reaffirming the spirit of the blues to modern people. In 1989 (Heisei 1), an English version of "My Ellie," written by Kuwata Keisuke of Southern All Stars, was released in Japan, and became a huge hit.
