The Jewish communities of the Orient (Yemen, Iraq, Persia, Georgia, Bukhara, Kurdistan, India, Ethiopia, etc.) are of Sephardic descent, but each has retained its own distinctive musical form, and the Yemeni Jews in particular are noteworthy for having preserved to this day an ancient musical form that dates back to the time of the Old Testament. In contrast, the Ashkenazim have assimilated rapidly into European culture, and in tandem with the Reformation of Judaism, their religious music has also been changed to have a Western feel by choral director and composer Solomon Sulzer (1804-90) and others. As an extension of this phenomenon, many Jewish musicians were active in the field of European art music (Jüsskind von Trimberg (12th century), Salamone de Rossi (c. 1570?-1630), Mendelssohn, Mahler, Schoenberg, Arthur Rubinstein, Menuhin, etc.). *Some of the terminology that mentions "Sulzer, S." is listed below. …
