Also called Zhili Province. An administrative division directly subordinate to the capital of the Ming and Qing dynasties, today's Hebei Province. Ming Emperor Taizu (→Emperor Hongwu) initially established his capital in Nanjing, and called the areas directly subordinate to the capital Zhili, and placed administrative offices in other regions. However, when Emperor Chengzu (→Emperor Yongle) established his capital in Beijing, he made Beiping administrative office Zhili. During the Ming Dynasty, there were two regions, Southern and Northern Zhili, but the Qing Dynasty inherited Northern Zhili from the Ming Dynasty.
