A volcanic island located in the northern part of the Toka Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture. It has the largest population in the archipelago, and at 34.42 km2 , it is the largest. It is made of andesite, and the highest point in the north is the active volcano Ontake (a stratovolcano with an elevation of 979 m). Hot springs bubble up in the village near Nakanoshima Port, which is accessible by ferry from Kagoshima and Naze on Amami Oshima, and steam still rises from the crater near the summit. The small amount of flat land is used for farming, grazing Japanese cattle, and Tokara horses (a prefectural natural monument). The magatama-shaped bottomless pond in the eastern part of the island is also called Oike, and because it is shallow, most of it has become a wetland, providing a habitat for wild birds.Nakanoshima→ Related topics Osaka [City] | Kita [Ward] | Yodoya Tatsugoro Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
