A village in Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located on the east coast of central Okinawa Island (main island). Population: 4,651 (1995). A gently sloping raised sea-cut platform that was dissected from the mountainous backbone toward the Pacific Ocean. It was a purely rural area, with many overseas immigrants before World War II. Immediately after the war, nearly 100,000 refugees from the central and southern parts of the country lived there, and in 1945-46, the occupying forces established six cities in the current village area: Ginoza, Kochiya, Kanna, Sokei, Shirohara, and Fukuyama. As the refugees began to return to their hometowns, the population dropped sharply, and the six cities were abolished and Ginoza Village was established.
