There are compounds of iodine and mercury in which the oxidation states of mercury correspond to I and II.
[Mercury iodide(I)]
Chemical formula: Hg ₂ I ₂ . Yellow tetragonal crystal. Specific gravity: 7.70, melting point: 290°C (partially decomposed), sublimes at 140°C. Its structure is similar to mercury bromide(I) Hg ₂ Br ₂ , with Hg-Hg bonds, and each mercury atom has a distorted octahedral hexagonal structure with six atoms, including five iodine atoms. When an alkali iodide is added to an aqueous solution of mercury(I) nitrate, it precipitates, which can be filtered and dried under reduced pressure to obtain the desired product.

　化学式Hg₂I₂。黄色正方晶系の結晶。比重7.70，融点290℃(一部分解)，140℃で昇華する。構造は臭化水銀(I) Hg₂Br₂に似ており，Hg－Hg結合をもち，各水銀原子はさらに5個のヨウ素原子を含めて6個の原子とひずんだ八面体6配位構造を有している。硝酸水銀(I)水溶液にヨウ化アルカリを加えると沈殿し，これをろ過後減圧乾燥により得られる。
